Hormone imbalance symptoms

When you do not feel like yourself, there may be a reason.

Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can affect multiple areas of daily life. Female hormone replacement therapy may help selected patients address bothersome symptoms after an individualized medical evaluation.

Common concerns include fatigue, brain fog, mood changes, anxiety, low libido, sleep disruption, hot flashes, night sweats, weight changes, hair thinning, memory changes, reduced muscle mass, and changes in bone health.

01

Energy

Evaluation may help identify whether hormonal changes, sleep disruption, nutritional factors, or other medical concerns are contributing to persistent fatigue.

02

Mental Clarity

A personalized plan may support women experiencing brain fog, memory changes, difficulty concentrating, or reduced mental sharpness.

03

Mood

Hormonal transitions can overlap with irritability, anxiety, sadness, or emotional sensitivity. Care is coordinated with appropriate mental health support when needed.

04

Libido

Low desire can have multiple causes. Your consultation considers hormonal, physical, medication-related, emotional, and relationship factors.

05

Restful Sleep

Treatment may help selected patients whose sleep is disrupted by night sweats, temperature changes, or other menopause-related symptoms.

07

Muscle Health

A long-term wellness plan may incorporate hormone care, resistance training, nutrition, and recovery strategies to support healthy aging.

08

Bone Health

Estrogen status is one consideration in bone health. Individual risk, screening history, lifestyle, and additional medical factors are also reviewed.

09

Healthy Aging

Treatment is designed around symptom relief, risk assessment, quality of life, and the broader goals of lab-guided longevity care.

10

Confidence and Vitality

Feeling better is personal. The goal is not to change who you are, but to help you understand your symptoms and explore appropriate, evidence-informed options with a medical professional.

Individual results vary

Temperature Comfort

Hot flashes and night sweats are common reasons women seek menopause treatment and can be discussed during a comprehensive consultation.

Is hormone therapy likely to be right for you?

This is the question a consultation exists to answer, and the honest answer is not always yes. The points below are general guidance, not a substitute for medical evaluation — but they give you a sense of where a conversation usually starts.

Worth exploring if

  • Your cycles have changed, stopped, or become unpredictable, and symptoms followed.
  • Hot flashes, night sweats, or disrupted sleep are affecting how you function day to day.
  • Mood, focus, or libido shifted in a way that does not match the rest of your life.
  • You went through menopause early, or had ovaries removed.
  • You have been told your labs are “normal” but you still do not feel well.

Needs closer review first

  • A personal history of breast, uterine, or other hormone-sensitive cancer.
  • A history of blood clots, stroke, or certain cardiovascular conditions.
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding that has not yet been evaluated.
  • Active liver disease, or pregnancy and possible pregnancy.
  • Symptoms that may have a non-hormonal cause, such as thyroid or sleep disorders.

Some items in the second column rule hormone therapy out. Others simply change which medication, dose, or delivery route may be considered. That distinction is made during a medical consultation, not from a checklist — and if hormone therapy is not the right answer for you, we will say so.

How treatment works

Thoughtful care from your first conversation forward.

Women's hormone optimization is not based on a single laboratory number. Your care begins with listening, continues with appropriate clinical evaluation, and evolves through ongoing follow-up.

Listen and evaluate

Comprehensive Consultation and Laboratory Evaluation

We discuss your symptoms, menstrual and menopause history, medications, prior treatments, family history, health risks, lifestyle, and personal goals. Laboratory testing and additional screening may be recommended based on your individual situation — and results are always read alongside your history rather than in isolation. You can read more about our approach to lab-guided clinical evaluation.

Personalize the plan

Physician-Led Hormone Optimization Plan

When hormone therapy is appropriate, the formulation, route, and dose are selected according to your symptoms, medical history, preferences, and clinical needs. Your plan may include estradiol, progesterone, Provera, or carefully monitored topical testosterone. Not every therapy is appropriate for every patient, and the plan is explained to you before anything begins. Care can be coordinated with the wider Aevum care team when other services are relevant.

Monitor and refine

Ongoing Follow-Up and Long-Term Wellness

Follow-up visits are used to review symptoms, response, side effects, adherence, blood pressure, relevant laboratory findings, and changing health needs. Treatment may be adjusted, continued, or discontinued based on your ongoing clinical assessment. For patients who want continuing care, Aevum offers membership options that cover ongoing physician-led support.

How the delivery route is chosen

The same hormone can behave differently depending on how it enters the body. Route affects absorption, how steady levels stay between doses, how it interacts with other medications, and — importantly — how easily the dose can be changed later. Most plans at Aevum start with an adjustable route so treatment can be refined as your response and health needs change.

Transdermal patch

Applied on a schedule and absorbed through the skin, giving relatively steady levels. Dose can be changed or stopped at the next application.

Topical gel

Applied daily, allowing fine adjustment. Application site and transfer precautions are reviewed with you.

Oral therapy

Taken by mouth and processed through the liver first, which is why it suits some patients and not others depending on individual risk factors.

Pellets, case by case

Implanted and released over months. Considered on an individual basis, with the trade-off that the dose cannot readily be adjusted once placed.

Progesterone or a progestin is generally part of the plan for women who still have a uterus, to protect the uterine lining when estrogen is used. Which route and combination suit you is a clinical decision made during your evaluation, not a preference selected from a menu.

Start with a conversation, not a commitment.

Your consultation is an opportunity to understand your symptoms, review treatment options, and determine whether hormone therapy may be appropriate.

Women's hormone therapy FAQ

Clear answers for an important decision.

Common questions about hormone replacement therapy for women in Houston — bioidentical hormones, menopause and perimenopause treatment, laboratory testing, delivery methods, safety considerations, and what care at Aevum actually involves.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, often called BHRT, generally refers to hormones that are chemically identical to hormones produced by the human body. Estradiol and micronized progesterone are examples. Not every hormone medication is bioidentical — Provera is a synthetic progestin. Your clinician will explain the differences and recommend options based on your individual needs.

Potential candidates may include women experiencing bothersome perimenopause or menopause symptoms, premature loss of ovarian function, or other clinically appropriate hormonal concerns. Candidacy depends on symptoms, medical history, age, timing, risk factors, medications, and personal preferences.

Hormone therapy is not appropriate for everyone. A clinician will look closely at factors such as a personal history of certain cancers, unexplained vaginal bleeding, a history of blood clots or stroke, active liver disease, certain cardiovascular conditions, and pregnancy.

Some of these are absolute reasons not to treat; others simply change which medication, dose, or route may be considered. This is one of the main reasons a full evaluation comes before any prescription.

Hormone therapy has potential benefits and risks, and safety depends on the individual patient, medication, dose, route, duration, and timing. Your clinician will review relevant considerations such as breast health, uterine health, cardiovascular risk, clotting history, liver disease, migraine history, unexplained bleeding, and other medical factors.

Depending on the cause and the treatment selected, some women may experience improvement in hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disruption, mood-related symptoms, or other menopause concerns. Results vary, and not every symptom is caused by a hormone imbalance.

Laboratory testing may be recommended to evaluate symptoms, establish a baseline, monitor selected treatments, or assess other medical causes. Testing is chosen individually and may include hormone-related markers, thyroid function, metabolic and blood count panels, and other studies based on your history.

Menopause and perimenopause are not diagnosed from a single hormone level alone. Results are interpreted alongside your symptoms and clinical evaluation — you can read more about how Aevum approaches lab-guided care.

The timeline varies by symptom, medication, dose, and individual response. Some patients notice changes within several weeks, while others require more time or adjustments. Follow-up helps determine whether the plan is effective and well tolerated.

Available options may include estradiol patches, estradiol gel, oral estradiol, progesterone, Provera, and topical testosterone when clinically appropriate. Hormone pellets may be considered on an individual basis following medical evaluation. The availability of a medication does not mean it is suitable for every patient.

There is currently no testosterone product approved by the FDA specifically for women in the United States. When testosterone is considered for a female patient, it is prescribed off-label.

Topical testosterone may be considered for selected women after an individualized assessment. Your clinician will review the reasoning, available evidence, dosing, monitoring, and potential side effects with you before treatment begins. It is not prescribed solely because a laboratory value falls within a particular range.

Aevum considers hormone pellets on an individual, patient-by-patient basis rather than offering them as a standard first option. Whether pellets are appropriate for you is a clinical decision made during your evaluation.

Delivery route affects how a hormone is absorbed, how steady levels stay between doses, and how easily the dose can be changed. Patches, gels, and oral medications are taken or applied on a schedule, so a dose can be adjusted or stopped as your response and health needs change. Pellets are implanted and release hormone over a period of months, which means the dose cannot readily be adjusted or discontinued once placed — a trade-off worth understanding before choosing that route.

Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause. During this time, hormone production and menstrual patterns can change. Symptoms may include cycle changes, hot flashes, sleep disruption, mood changes, brain fog, headaches, and changes in libido. Perimenopause can begin years before periods stop, which is one reason symptoms are often attributed to something else.

Follow-up timing depends on the medication selected, your medical history, symptom response, and monitoring needs. Visits may be closer together when treatment begins or changes, then spaced out when the plan is stable and appropriate.

Yes. Treatment may be individualized by medication, route, dose, timing, monitoring schedule, and supportive wellness recommendations. Personalization does not mean using higher doses or targeting a predetermined laboratory number; it means adapting care to your clinical needs.

Aevum is a physician-led clinic in Houston. Evaluation and prescribing decisions are made by a clinician who reviews your symptoms, history, and risk factors, and who follows your response over time.

That differs from models built around a fixed menu or a questionnaire, where the same protocol is applied broadly and follow-up is limited. It also means some patients are told that hormone therapy is not the right answer for them. Learn more about the Aevum care team.

Cost depends on the evaluation required, the medication and route selected, any laboratory testing, and how you choose to structure ongoing care. Aevum offers membership options for patients who want continuing physician-led care — you can compare membership options and pricing, or ask during your consultation so the numbers reflect your actual plan.

Begin by scheduling a consultation with Aevum Restorative Wellness at our Houston Heights clinic. During the visit, your clinician will review your concerns, medical history, potential testing, treatment options, risks, alternatives, and recommended next steps. If travelling to the clinic is difficult, Aevum Mobile serves patients within our Houston service area.
